Who can design and install fire protection services in NSW?

As of 1st October 2017, the new Environmental Planning & Assessment Regulation came into effect meaning Annual Fire Safety Statement assessments must be carried out by a Competent Fire Safety Practitioner.

While it states that building owners must now employ a ‘Competent Fire Safety Practitioner’ to assess their system’s annual compliance, Planning NSW has not defined who this might be or how building owners determine competence- other than promising a ‘register’ in the future.

The Association of Accredited Certifiers, NSW (AAC) recommended methodology for other AAC members or building owners in assessing the competencies expected for persons preparing the design and specifications for proposed building works under Clause 167A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment (Fire Safety and Building Certification) regulation 2017.
